Treaty of Nice (2001)

Official name: Treaty of Nice amending the Treaty on European Union, the Treaties establishing the European Communities and certain related acts

The treaty signed on 26 February 2001 by the European Union member states.

The treaty came into effect on 1 February 2003.

The Treaty amended the Treaty of Rome (1957) and the Maastricht Treaty (1992), and among other things, introduced structural changes, such as increasing the number of seats in the European Parliament, that would help the European Union adapt to expansions.
