European Coal and Steel Community

Discipline: Economics

Usually abbreviated as: ECSC

The international organization created by the Treaty of Paris (1951) by six Western European states (Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany).

The objective of the European Coal and Steel Community was to prevent future wars between member states, and create a common market for coal and steel.

The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC) was eventually merged under the roof of the European Economic Community by the Merger Treaty (1965).
